New Ross
New Ross is a bustling town located in County Wexford, situated on the banks of the River Barrow. We stayed in a farmhouse down one of those now-familiar narrow country lanes. It is known for its rich history and scenic location. One of the main attractions is the Dunbrody Famine Ship Experience, which offers a deep dive into Ireland’s history during the Great Famine. Visitors can learn about the hardships faced by those who emigrated during this period. With that as our base, we also explored the areas below.
Wexford
Wexford is a vibrant town located in County Wexford, Ireland, and serves as the county’s administrative center. It has a rich history and is known for its picturesque scenery, cultural heritage, and historical significance. It was a rainy day when we visited, so we did not really see much of the town.
Wexford’s name derives from the Old Norse “Waesfjord,” meaning “inlet of the mud-flats.” The town has been inhabited since prehistoric times, with evidence of human activity dating back thousands of years. It played a significant role during various historical events, including the Norman invasion and the 1798 Rebellion.
Hook Head
Hook Head is known for its iconic lighthouse, Hook Head Lighthouse, which is one of the oldest operational lighthouses in the world. The area offers breathtaking views of the coastline and is a great spot for walking and exploring nature. The lighthouse has a rich history dating back to medieval times when it was maintained by monks.
Dunbrody Abbey
Dunbrody Abbey, located on the Hook Peninsula in County Wexford, dates back to the 13th century. It retains much of its original structure and offers visitors a glimpse into Ireland’s monastic past. The site includes extensive remains of buildings around the cloister garth and provides educational experiences about its historical significance.
